i've always wondered what gave students' council such a bad reputation. i love students' council to the core. and i cant imagine my life in mjc without it. but others dont seem to understand why and are not even close to feeling so. i've had this overwhelming need to blog abt this ever since i left the interview room just now. so many candidates brought up the issue of how the student body has had a bad perception of the council. and to tell you the honest truth, it really makes me damn sad to hear it. they brought up all sorts of reasons but it in the end comes down to total ignorance, lack of understanding and a damn screwed up opinion of sc. and before you (whoever is reading this) close your ears and mind to what i'm going to say, pls do hear me out.
misperception no.1) we do this for the cert.
misperception no.1) we do this for the cert.
i would be a total liar if i told you that the cert has nothing to do with it. and you would be one too, if you were to tell me that enetering competitions or representing the school has absolutely nothing to do with getting a good SGC. similar to every other person we as councillors do want a good cert too. but it is definitely not the sole reason why we do it. as cliche as it sounds we do it because we want to and we enjoy it. yes we enjoy staying back late organising events, yes we enjoy cheering during soccer cheers, yes we enjoy doing mass dance, and yes we enjoy helping out the school (eg:cleaning lockers, lending out blazers.) it is what we do and just like every other CCA we enjoy it. i guess it sounds hard to believe that yes we do love the school and are willing to go all out to do our best for the school. and i guess its easier for some to believe otherwise. but pls do stop and think before you say something abt the sc, because in actual fact , we are just like you.
misperception no.2) We are not doing our job.
as councillors we are tasked to do several things, all of which we are fully aware of. amongst some are serving the school, voicing out the opinions of students to the school management and most importantly bringing change to the school for the ultimate benefit of everyone. it reall hurts me to hear some say that we are not doing our job and that we are merely all talk but no action. i guess that maybe these people have had a bad encounter with some of the councillors. we are humans too and we do make mistakes. ' a rotten apple does not mean that the whole bunch is rotten.' i guess that it is partly our fault cause we do not publicise to the whole school what we have done, and i guess it can be understood why there is such a high level of misunderstanding. amongst the many changes are: school jackets, school shirts, power plugs at the study benches, student lounges etc. all of which had been suggestions garnered through the feedback sessions held. we had even brought up some of the other suggestions to the principal of which were not approve, that's why it was not carried out. we are doing what we can and will continue to strive for the best for the school.
i hope that this insight has made you understand what we go through as councillors.
